Rethinking Repentence

A look at the backstory of the calling of the first diciples and why they responded to Jesus’ call to follow him.  Sure we stop the “bad stuff” when we repent, but there remains grounds to view repentance as more than that.

The Two-Edged Sword of “Immanuel”

In Matthew 1:18-25, we’re given the gracious words of the angel that promised Jesus was Immanuel, which means “God with us!” The implications are radical! We must acknowledge if “God with us” is real, then we can’t just go on and do our own thing in our own ways without ever having to expect we might just be surprised one day to find God pushing us in another direction.

Questioning Jesus

November 12, 2010 podcaster No Comments » Jesus, Luke

In Luke 20:27-40, a group of religious people called “Sadducees” question Jesus about resurrection and marriage. In this message, Wayne explores the passage in the larger context of Luke’s gospel and especially the current section in which Jesus is in the Jerusalem temple everyday, teaching and experiencing opposition.

This is the sixth Sunday after Easter.  Our attention is still on the resurrected Jesus; but we begin to look toward his ascension.

We can look at no better passage for understanding how Jesus viewed his departure from earth than chapters 13-17 of the Gospel of John — Jesus’ farewell discourse with his friends.  Today’s message comes from that context – John 14:23-29.  A close look at verses 23-24 is like a window into the whole of Scripture!  Wayne walks through the narrative of the Bible to show that God’s glory isincarnated glory.  From Jesus’ words to his followers, we learn that God is revealed in the obedient, action-oriented love of the beloved community.

God’s Expanding Embrace

Luke 4:21-30.  The story of Jesus being driven to the edge by the crowd that day is a story about us.  When we don’t really want to think that “other” people, different from us could ever be with us or one of us, we need to hear this message.  God is at work in the people of that other culture, other land, other skin-color, other sexual orientation, other religion, other political party … How large is your view of God’s nature, how wide is your understanding of God’s embrace, how deep is your sense of the movement of God?

Scripture Reading: Amber Webb

In John 2:1-11, we see glory redefined. It is glory with a silent purpose and aim, to create faith in Jesus.  He responds to human need in ways that seem hidden and mysterious.  But his ways are open to the eyes of faith.
