Jesus: Revealed to the World

Sunday, May 9, 2010

Reader: Leslie Goff

Speaker: Wayne Cox

This is the sixth Sunday after Easter.  Our attention is still on the resurrected Jesus; but we begin to look toward his ascension.

We can look at no better passage for understanding how Jesus viewed his departure from earth than chapters 13-17 of the Gospel of John — Jesus’ farewell discourse with his friends.  Today’s message comes from that context – John 14:23-29.  A close look at verses 23-24 is like a window into the whole of Scripture!  Wayne walks through the narrative of the Bible to show that God’s glory isincarnated glory.  From Jesus’ words to his followers, we learn that God is revealed in the obedient, action-oriented love of the beloved community.

Important Things Passed On

Sunday, February 7, 2010

Speaker: Wayne Cox

Followers of Jesus are, at their core, “story” people.  We’ve received the story of salvation, and we pass it on through our proclamation.  In 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, the apostle Paul identifies the core of the message:  Christ died according to the scriptures, he was buried, he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and he appeared to faithful witnesses.  And with that first generation of faithful witnesses, the process of receiving and passing on began.

Advent: (Anti-)Heroic Faith

Sunday, December 13, 2009

The third Sunday of Advent traditionally focuses on joy. This message begins with a reading of Isaiah 12:2-6 and a meditation on Philippians 4:4-7.  The teaching comes from Luke 3:7-18, John the Baptist’s sermon to the expectant people, looking for the in-breaking of God’s kingdom.

Speaker: Wayne Cox

John 15:1-17.  Fruitfulness, growth, and maturity are natural characteristics of God’s people in the Bible.  And yet, we’ve become accustomed to a church that is not growing or multiplying in the way it was intended.  Our mission is to experience Spirit-driven multiplication on every level:  one-on-one, small group, and congregation.
